The 9 Step Engineering Process

The engineering process is a set of structured steps engineers follow to create and construct products. There are many different models of the engineering process, with fewer or additional steps. However, they all follow the same pattern. In this article, we’ll explore a 9-step design process that engineers use to solve specific issues.

The first step in the process of engineering design is to define the problem. This is an essential process, as failing to clearly and precisely define the problem could stall projects at a later time in the design process. In many cases, the solution to a problem can be found at this point. For example, when students were asked to design a method to secure their lunch hooks onto the desk’s bottom they came up with a simple solution of attaching a hook onto the bottom of the desk.

The next step is to conduct an analysis of requirements to identify the specifics of customer needs and the resources available. This will allow you to create a specific set of project requirements and constraints. For instance the case where a customer requires their new product to be able to hold 20 pounds an engineer will estimate the amount of weight the system will be able to hold and what size the hook should be to ensure that it can hold all of the student’s full lunches.

The next phase, called design planning or design synthesis, is where the specifics are set and the specific design of the final product is created. This involves establishing the connections, outputs, and inputs of the different modules that comprise the system in general. Tools used during this phase include Gantt and Pert charts and spreadsheets for loading resources sketches, drawings, and proof-of-concept models.
